Doctoral Advisor Selection in Chemical Engineering: Evaluating Two Programs through Principal-Agent Theory

چکیده

Background: Little is known about how doctoral advising relationships form, but understanding the inception of these can be helpful to address attrition. Chemical Engineering programs highly structure this advisor-advisee selection when compared other engineering programs.Purpose: This study examines two in practice process from perspective their faculty. In particular, our uses principal-agent theory following research question:How do manage matching process? Methods: Through multi-case methods, we examine faculty perceptions large U.S. Our coding was informed using Principal-Agent Theory as a framework help characterize and develop insight into interactions with students graduate program director. Results: findings showed that perceived control could strongly impact whether they adhere departmental processes adapt existing practices or if circumvent process. also role transparency such impacted engagement. Conclusion: We recommend departments consider shared governance regarding continuously engage conversations surface implicit explicit perpetuate good community academic units. present recommendations for economics frameworks studying processes.

Rediefining the Government-University Relationship using the Principal-Agent Theory

Government–university relationship has always been challenging. Many theories have emerged to explain this relationship. Among them, the principal-agent theory (PAT) has mainly developed in recent decades. This research aims to utilize PAT as a theoretical framework to redefine the government-university relationship to discover the insights agency theory can offer in this context. From the view...

Global Approximations for Principal Agent Theory

Principal Agent Theory (PAT) seeks to identify incentives and sanctions that a consumer should offer a producer as part of a contract in order to maximise the former’s utility. However, identifying optimal contracts in large systems is difficult, particularly when little information is available about producer competencies. In this work we propose that a global contract be used to govern such i...

Implementation in Principal-Agent Models of Adverse Selection

This paper studies implementation in a principal-agent model of adverse selection. We explore ways in which the additional structure of principal-agent models (compared to general implementation models) simplifies the implementation problem. We develop a connection between the single crossing property and monotonicity conditions which are necessary for Nash and Bayesian Nash implementation. We ...
